CARE began work in Nigeria in 2017, in response to the emergency crises between Boko Haram insurgency and the military counterinsurgency that has led to more than 20,000 people killed and led to the abduction of over 4000 women and girls. Now in its ninth year, the situation in the NE remains extremely critical with 1.6 million internally displaced persons (IDPs), 1.3 million people are returnees and over 7.7 million women, men, girls and boys are in need of critical lifesaving assistance. CARE is currently active in the 2 worst hit states in the northeast, namely Borno and Yobe States and hard to reach Local Government Areas in those states.
